| I am a retired elementary school teacher and an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists. I am a self taught artist. I work in fabric and I am a watercolour painter. I began working with fabric as a child. I knitted, rug hooked, embroidered, wove, macramed, sewed my own wardrobe and quilted. Twenty years ago, I started to take art lessons (drawing, watercolour painting). As I developed my watercolour painting, I started to marry the two mediums together. What I learned about watercolour, I started to apply to fabric. Sometimes my watercolours are catalysts for my fabric art. Using learned watercolour techniques, I paint images on cotton. I often use glue resist, paint pouring, chalk pastels, sandpaper transfers, heliographic painting, stencilling, acrylic gels, and fabric crayons. I embellish my work with tulle, sequins, beads embroidery, metallic threads, yarns and found objects. All of my work is hand quilted and finished with a sleeve in the top and bottom (so that the art work can be hung on a wall). The leftover scraps of fabric are made into wearable art. I paint a variety of subjects moving from one subject to the next. I get bored working in the same theme. However, when I stand back and look, I have really painted in many themes. I paint figures, still lifes, landscapes, leaves, buildings, trees, rocks, flowers, and I often make social comments about the world through cloth game boards and using objects as metaphors. I often paint fabric and paper side by side. Recently, I have experimented with watercolour on canvas.
I work as a visiting artist in the schools and an artist in residence. I have created 5 quilt projects in the Burnaby Schools, 2 mural projects, a Bird and Tree quilt with the Ecology Centre In Stanley Park, and a community art quilt at Bonaccord Elementary in Surrey. I've taught fabric painting to adults and children at Leigh Square in Poco. |
